WHO WAS THERE: Sue Ann Lau, Ann Slaby, John Chong, Tahi Reynolds, Joanne Fujii, Mel Choy, Sandra Ohara, Howard Yoshiura, Vernon Kajikawa, Dayton Auyong, Barbara Yamashita, Sandee & Nathan Wong, Dennis Sugihara, Jade Young, Ricky AuHoy, Evie & Chet Ching, Carolyn Adler, Vince Lee, Bongo Chun, Fay Yoshida, Linda Mae Onomoto, Dennis Saiki, Miles Nakashima, Keoni Jeremiah, Principal, University Lab School.
WHAT WE DID: We drank, we ate, we talked, we sang Happy Birthday to ourselves, we looked at pictures of ourselves, we made Evie work, and we listened to the Lab School Principal. To show that we've maintained our sense of humor, we made Evie Ching hand-out the name tags to everyone....this was the first reunion Evie has attended. She did very well and even gave Bongo Chun a new nickname. A slide show of pictures from our past was shown on a wall in the party room throughout the evening and there were comments and laughter as people remembered events shown by the pictures.
The "Johnny Carson" of our class, Vernon, started the evening off by giving us an overview of the evening's activities and introduced Jade who offered the blessing and inspirational words to remember those classmates who are no longer with us. Bento meals were provided for everyone and we ate while sitting poolside at 999 Wilder.
Vernon provided information about the genesis for the "Strive for Twenty-Five" fund drive and shared how our class was recognized with a framed certificate attesting to our successful fund drive at the ULS Alumni Dinner during the summer. Keoni Jeremiah (ULS '89), ULS Principal, then spoke about ULS and the on-going work and plans for the continued improvement of physical facilities and curriculum. 1966, three years after we graduated, was a pivotal year for the school - student teachers from UH no longer taught at UHS and class size was reduced to two classes per grade, among other changes. As you look at the pictures, notice how we still pay attention when the School Principal speaks....something we always did when Dr's. Andrew Inn and Torleff Nelson spoke. Not.
Old habits die hard...Ricky was again called upon to lead us in singing "Happy Birthday" as we gazed upon a scrumptious "rainbow" cake with appropriate birthday greetings. There was no hesitation in eating the cake....ono!
This venue allowed everyone to mingle and "talk story" and there was a lot of that throughout the evening. We all had a good time.
Special thanks go to Sandra Ohara for securing her mother's condo party room for the gathering and to Fay and Carolyn for ordering the food and cake. Pictures were provided by Howard, JC, and Miles.
