Reunions

As the years go by, memories dim and details are forgotten.  One memory does not fade however - we always had fun when we were in school
as evidenced by the pictures in the Uniki yearbooks.  Dances in the "Barn" - our school gym with the uneven concrete floor; fund drives to help
the less fortunate; participation in the All-School Picnic and All-School Nite; 7th grade camp and senior camp at Camp Erdman; and all the other
activities we engaged in as a Class that served to create a bond that endures till today.

This page provides information about those planned events starting with the 1973 tenth year celebration up till 2023 when we celebrated our last planned reunion when we observed our sixty years since 1963.  Other website pages contain additional information and pictures about those events  We never believed in being traditional when we were students and we didn't change when it came to our reunions as can be seen by the list and pictures on this page.

1973 - 10th Year Reunion

The reunion was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  Unfortunately we don't have any pictures or other information about the event.

1978 - 15th Year Reunion

The reunion was held at the Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce.  Unfortunately we don't have any pictures or other information about the event.

1983 - 20th Year Reunion

This reunion was a two-day event with a banquet at the Kahala Hilton on August 18 and a family picnic at Ala Moana Beach Park on August 21.  Members of the planning committee were:  Ken Chun, Carolyn Holu, Joanne Sato, Ricky AuHoy, Vernon Kajikawa, Sue Ann Lau, Sandra Aoki, Fay Yamashita, and Dennis Sugihara.  The reunion was well attended with the following classmates and their families at the banquet or picnic:  Donald Fox, Glenn Bauer, Larry Lim, Cheryl Ho, Keith Racuya, Melvin Choy, Karen Lei Kokubun, Ricky AuHoy, Linda Mae Onomoto, Howard Yoshiura, Dennis Sugihara, Jan & Stan Naguwa, Carolyn Fukunaga, Tahi Mottl, Penny Rian, Sandra Aoki, Fay Yamashita, Walter Fong, Ken Chun, John Lee, John Chong, and Vernon Kajikawa.  Classmates still had their youthful energy as they competed in relay races and egg-tossing activities.  A video, courtesy of Walter Fong, is contained at this link - due to the age of the video, it is not of the best quality but people are recognizable.

1988 - 25th Year Reunion

Thirty-eight of our classmates attended this reunion held over a two-day period at the Crosspointe Recreation Center on October 18 and the Hale Koa hotel on October 21.  Class T-shirts (green shirt with white lettering) were given to all participants who contributed to the 25th Reunion Slush Fund.  Everyone wore their T-Shirts except for Jade, who wore it on her shoulders, and Susan Vaught, who now lives in New York City. Among the off-islanders attending were Dayton Auyong, Walter Fong, Carolyn Fukunaga, Susan Vaught, and Cheryl Ho.

Members of the reunion planning group were Ricky AuHoy, Fay Yamashita, Vernon Kajikawa, Carolyn Holu, and Iris Murata.

The Crosspointe activity was a classmates only event featuring relay games, a paper airplane contest (won by Ken Chun), an identify the logo contest, as well as John Chong's famous UHS 1963 Trivia Game, and a white elephant exchange.  Vernon served as the MC for the program.  During the Trivia Game, Dayton's team lost valuable points when no one, not even Dayton, could remember that he was one of the 12 classmates that graduated with honors.  Everyone enjoyed a delicious Japanese-style buffet dinner that Fay arranged through friends at Shirokiya.  We were having so much fun that the party did not end until an hour after normal closing time.  Fortunately, someone was clever enough to offer the security guard all the food he could eat.

The second day's activities at the Kahala Hilton were slightly more formal (no T-shirt) than Crosspointe.  However, it turned out to be just as much fun due to the program developed by Iris and enhanced by Dayton, who was volunteered at MC on very short notice.  Highlights of the evening included a Win-Lose-Draw game in which several classmates displayed remarkable talents for people over 40; an appearance by the UHS-version Supremes (Dennis, Howard, and Walter).  Iris was trying to get John into drag to be one of the singing trio but no way did she have clothes his size. Selection of Barbara and Kenneth as the most youthful-looking in attendance (this was a hotly contested vote since many of us continue to appear much younger than our years).  This party also ended an hour late and for some it ended at a karaoke bar where they were entertained by Dennis Saiki singing Japanese songs.

1993 - 30th Year

The reunion was held at the Hale Koa Hotel.

1998 - 35th Year

The reunion was a potluck gathering at the Moanalus Gardens on July 25 attended by twelve classmates.

1999 - Off Year Get-together

Twenty-six classmates met at the 3660 on the Rise restaurant to renew old times on October 23.

2000 - Off Year Get-together

October 21 at the Elks Club is where twenty-eight of our classmates gathered to "talk story" and renew friendships to celebrate Y2K.

2001 - Off Year Get-together

Twenty-one classmates met on October 21 in the party room at 999 Wilder.  This was our third year we got together without it being in celebration of the traditional five-year reunion increments - we look for any reason to relive the past.

2002 - Off Year Get-together

October 26 was the date nineteen classmates got together at 999 Wilder.

2003 - 40th Year Reunion

In celebration of our 40th year since we graduated from UHS, the Class of 1963 met on October 17 at the Elks Club.  Twenty-nine classmates along with special guest, Miss Shizumi Kunioka, our cafeteria manager at UHS, enjoyed a night of sharing memories and catching-up on our lives.  On October 19, twenty classmates and spouses met for brunch at Hale I'kena.

2004 - Off Year Get-together

We did something different for this reunion - we went to Las Vegas!  Nineteen classmates with spouses met in the desert amid the flashing lights to enjoy each other's company as well as to increase or decrease our family fortunes.

2007 - Off Year Get-together

Eighteen classmates met at Hee Hing Chop Suey on October 20.

2008 - Off Year Get-together

Brunch at Hale Ikena.

2009 - 45th Reunion

Our 45th reunion should have been in 2008 but we had to cancel our plans for the Little Village Noodle Shop and Hale I'kena.  Our belated 45th reunion was held on May 3, 2009 at the Waioli Team Room & Restaurant with twenty-six classmates.

2009 - Dayton's Medicare Seminar

Twenty classmates met on November 17 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church to listen to a very informative presentation on Medicare by Dayton Auyong.  It came at an appropriate time in our lives as many of us approach eligibility.

2013 - 50th Year Reunion

(SEE THE 50TH REUNION WEBSITE PAGES FOR MORE COMPLETE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT)  The celebration of the Golden Anniversary since our graduation in June 1963 was the largest in terms of attendance and longest reunion spread over multiple days we have ever had.  A luncheon, golfing, ghost tour, bowling, informal gathering, tour of UHS, and the grand event of a banquet at Oahu Country Club, was spread over four days.  There was ample time and opportunity to renew old acquaintences and the pictures on the website pages are evidence that everyone had a great time!

2015 - 70 in 2015

(SEE THE 70-in-2015 WEBSITE PAGES FOR MORE COMPLETE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT)  Looking for any opportunity to gather together, classmates had a party to celebrate becoming seventy years old.  A variety of activities were held over a three-day period and culminated with a banquet the Pacific Club. Miss Kunioka was designated as an "honorary member" of the Class of '63 at the banquet.

2018 - 55th Year Reunion

(SEE THE 55TH YEAR WEBSITE PAGES FOR MORE COMPLETE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT) In recognition of getting older as we continue to have parties, all of the events for the fifty-fifth get together were held during daylight hours because driving at night was becoming problematic for some of us.  We had a Chinese lunch at the Maple Garden and later had a luncheon at The Willows restaurant that many of us remember from our younger years.

2022 - Off-Year Celebration

(SEE THE DIM SUM WEBSITE PAGES FOR MORE COMPLETE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT)  We do anything to get classmates together so we met for a Dim Sum luncheon at Harbor View.  Larry Lim was at the luncheon - most of us had not seen Larry since our graduation in 1963.  It was good to see him.
