WHO WAS THERE: Frank Yap, Miles Nakashima, Dayton Auyong, Carolyn Watanabe (Adler), Ricky AuHoy, Vernon Kajikawa, Fay Yamashita (Yoshida), Ken Chun, Mel Choy, Tahi Mottl (Reynolds), Dennis Sugihara & John Chong were the cheering section.
WHAT HAPPENED:
Ricky AuHoy was the Reunion Committee organizer for the bowling activity held at Fort Shafter Bowling Lanes on Friday, November 1, 2013.
Typical of our class, we spent an hour “talking story” and catching up with each other for an hour before getting to the business at hand....lunch!
After lunch, Ricky organized us into four teams: 1 = Tahi Mottl (Reynolds), Rick AuHoy, Miles Nakashima; 2 = Carolyn Watanabe (Adler), Vernon Kajikawa, Ken “Bongo” Chun; 3 = Dayton Auyong, Frank Yap; 4 = Mel Choy, Fay Yamashita (Yoshida). As we prepared to bowl, there was a lot of reminiscing about walking to Varsity Lanes for bowling class; the fact that Varsity Lanes only had two colors for balls - red for the light ball and black for the heavy ball; and also the fact that we manually kept score for the game instead of having electronic computerized scoring at Fort Shafter Bowling Lanes (no can cheat!)
Mel Choy walked into the alley carrying his own bowling ball and shoes! That sent a wave of fear into the group until Bongo Chun reminded us that one of Mel’s nicknames in school was, “Bogus.” That brought some comfort.
Carolyn Watanabe (Adler) was the first to roll (in her case, “fling with gusto” would be more appropriate)...she got a STRIKE! In fact, Tahi Mottl (Reynolds) and Fay Yamashita (Yoshida) also contributed Strikes and Spares that also reflected their hardwood skills. That really put pressure on the guys. We cheered for each other and there were a lot of high-fives and fist-bumps during the entire session. In fact, we made so much noise that we were the only ones present in the entire bowling alley at the end of our games.
Among some of the guys, it became evident that we weren’t as flexible and supple as when we bowled at Varsity Bowl as we dropped balls onto the lane instead of having a smooth graceful release of the ball. Some of us were talking about low back pain and sore leg muscles after the matches.
The pictures reflect what a great time we had.
